The beginning of my journey
Let me start from when I was still a teenager, and what drove me back then.
During my teenage years, I felt pretty lost about what lay ahead.
That year, my grandpa passed away. Since I was raised by him, it hit me hard.
I lost my sense of purpose, felt bitter about life, and it even affected my
studies. My parents and relatives noticed the change in me, though they
weren't sure why. So, they decided to do something about it and got me a
plane ticket to Japan. They sent me off to Tokyo for a three-day trip
to Disneyland. Even though I had traveled abroad when I was younger, this
was the first time I truly soaked in the world around me.
I'll never forget standing under the Tokyo Skytree or in front of the castle
at Tokyo Disneyland, feeling that overwhelming sense of wonder and inspiration.
After returning home, my cousin's family, who had just won a Golden Bell Award in Taiwan, invited me to intern at their studio. During my internship there, we traveled all over the country for filming assignments. It was during this time that I felt the calling from the animation industry. One afternoon, while everyone was busy working on a documentary about flying antelopes, I saw them using After Effects to create animations. I was blown away and thought to myself, "Wow! There are such cool things in this world!" It was this moment that sparked my interest, and I began diving into animation and special effects. As time went on and I delved deeper into the industry, under the guidance of my cousin's family, I learned everything from scene setup, cinematography, editing, to animation. Eventually, I realized that becoming a visual effects artist was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. To pursue this path, I put in a lot of effort, attending various courses and making lifelong friends and mentors online, including Jacys Lin, who is now a Senior FX Artist at Weta. I owe all my technical skills and abilities to him, and I'm extremely grateful. It's been quite a journey to get to where I am today.
For me, when I felt disappointed and abandoned by the world, it seemed like the world, in a strange way, sensed my needs and began to help me explore and understand it. It whispered to me in a magical manner, saying, "Hey, there's something amazing called animation in this world. I've brought some of the most talented people to you. Learn from them, get to know me."
Through animation and special effects, I want to understand the world more deeply. I want to experience more moments that shake my soul, similar to the awe I felt standing in front of the Disney castle all those years ago. I hope that, like myself when I was lost as a teenager, my work can reignite hope in others for this world.
